Neville Xerxes & Seamus Xavier

Last Monday night Jay texted me that we should come home from 4H as soon as we could.  When we got home, these two little guys were waiting for us!  They were part of a litter that was up for adoption at our vet's office and we had been looking at their picture for a week.

As you can see, they're settling in well!
These little kittens are so sweet and cuddly and already do so many things that remind me of Boris.  They're not a replacement for him at all, though.  We still miss him so much, but these guys are a happy distraction!

Boris Henri

(You know how in obituaries for old people they always have a picture of the person as a younger professional?  Here's Bobe's.)

We've been without our Boris for one week today.  He fought cancer for the last two months and while we hated to see him sick, we're thankful for all the time we had with him.  We're still adjusting, and it's going to take a while.  He was my constant companion through many nights of med school, residency, rural rotations, deployments, wakeful babies, and random bathroom breaks (when he always expected to receive a treat for accompanying you in the night).  We miss him so much.

The First Day of School

I'm a little slow (as usual!), but we had our first day of school on August 23.

 Obligatory back to school pictures!

And of course we had to take pictures with Boris, too.

We also started back with our artist study/tea time on the first day.  Until we get to October, we'll be doing a different artist each week.  We started with the Lascaux Cave Paintings.

The kids made their own cave drawings!

2017 Solar Eclipse

We scaled back our original eclipse plans, but we still had a great time!  We had planned to drive up to Joplin, which was supposed to have about 95% coverage, but their forecast looked cloudier than ours, so we decided to stay put.  We picked up some snacks at the grocery store this morning.

We went to a local park with friends where we would have a nice open view.

We picked up some glasses at Lowe's a few weeks ago and they were on the approved lists, so hopefully we will still have our vision intact tomorrow!

We took our colander and could see all the tiny crescents.

You could see them in the tree shadows, too!

 Eclipse selfie!

I love this picture my friend Leah took!  We were around 90% of totality and it was really cool to see!

The Fourth of July

Since it's been more than a month, I figured it was time to get pictures up from the Fourth of July!  We started the day with a parade in our neighborhood.

All of the kids decorated their bikes and scooters.

There was also a big water balloon fight at one homes in the neighborhood.

And that was followed up with some pool time!

In the evening we went to Jay's sister's house for some fireworks.

 Silly string!

This is probably my favorite shot of the night.  They look like they're in an action movie!  Ha!

This was one of Jack's favorites.

The remains...We had a great time!

Little Green Thumbs: Pollinators

The first Little Green Thumbs class Alice took this summer was on pollinators.
They got to try lots of different kinds of honey.  I didn't know there were that many kinds!
Some they liked...
...others, not so much.
Hamming it up!
They played a pollination game.
They also looked for pollinators in the garden.
And of course, we looked for frogs in the pond!
Snack time!
It was lots of fun!  I'm hoping she can go to at least one more class before the summer is over!

Somehow, Jack has developed a real love for sushi.  He will eat it every chance her gets!  Thankfully, he has a friend who also loves it and he got to have it for her birthday!
We tried a new (to us) place one evening after camp.
Still working on his chopstick skills--though he's better at it than I am!
At Survivor Camp they had a sushi challenge and learned how to make their own.  He loved it!
He made some extra for his lunch.
We went out for pizza and the kids ended up getting sushi and bringing it over!
He's even influencing Alice!
